Biking from Vienna to Budapest

Our 7 days of self guided biking from Vienna to Budapest saw us meandering through 3 very different countries (Austria, Slovakia & Hungary) as we regularly criss-crossed over the Danube. Although it was high season (July) there were a lot less cyclists than the previous 7 days from Passau to Vienna which suited us just fine! We really got out into the countryside on this tour as in Hungary especially, the small villages are a lot further apart & the route frequently moved away from the Danube. Wheat was being harvested & the sunflowers were in full bloom so plenty to see. Designated cycle paths are in place but sometimes we also had to ‘share the road’ with traffic but that was never a problem. Lots of castles, churches and abbeys along the way, so we found ourselves stopping quite a lot – usually according to the suggestions in the route book. Was good to have a mixture of accommodation – sometimes in larger cities and sometimes in smaller towns. We entered Budapest in style as the ferry boat for the last 30km was included – a great way to view the majestic old buildings that line the Danube in this fantastic city.
