Overview
You’ll see some of Europe’s grandest cities including Vienna and Budapest travelling via cycle-ways and by-ways.
The landscapes will be constantly changing as you cycle from the lower slopes of the Bavarian Alps, past historic castles, around lakes and alongside the mighty Danube river. Each day there will also be enough time to stop at some of the cultural highlights in each region. You’ll stay in carefully selected mainly four star hotels, plus great local cuisine will be on offer throughout the tour.
In the morning you’ll ride for around 40-70km (more or less as preferred) After lunch you can either ride or transfer to the next hotel by van. The rest of the afternoon will be free for individual sightseeing. The terrain is mainly flat except for some rolling hills in the first few days. The surfaces will be sealed roads or bike paths, usually away from busy traffic. The support vehicle is always available for those preferring less time in the saddle.
Non cycling partners are also welcome.

Arrival In Oberstdorf (Germany)
Welcome to Germany! Please make your own way to Oberstdorf which is just 2.5 hours by train from Munich - the capital of Bavaria. Located in the Bavarian Alps, Oberstdorf is a hiking and skiing village, making it a traditional and popular holiday destination for Europeans. Later this afternoon there will be a pre tour briefing where you will be introduced to your support crew.

Oberstdorf to Fussen
We begin our ride through the beautiful lower Bavarian Alps, stopping for lunch just before we reach the lakeside resort town of Füssen. There will be some free time here before our scheduled visit to Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle. Just a five minute drive from town, this iconic castle, built by the enigmatic King Ludwig II, is perched on steep rock faces. It is the model for Sleeping Beauty’s castle in Disneyland, and has inspired many artists, including Andy Warhol. We’ll spend the night in the town of Füssen (at 800m above sea level).

Fussen to Schliersee
Today we gently descend to 500m, then continue to the Pilgrimage Church of Wies which has been miraculously preserved in the beautiful setting of an Alpine valley. Designed in the 1740’s, it's the work of architect Dominikus Zimmermann and is a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo – exuberant, colourful and joyful. We continue riding past idyllic Bavarian lakes which are popular summer and winter holiday destinations, especially for people from Munich. Our lunch stop is at the Benediktbeuern Monastery (founded 739 AD) - one of the oldest and most beautiful in Upper Bavaria. Then it’s just a 43km transfer to Schliersee. Our centrally located hotel is just a short walk from the picturesque lake.

Schliersee to Burghausen
First it's 25km of rolling hills as we descend from 800m to 450m. After a coffee stop in Bad Feilnbach we continue to picturesque Lake Chiemsee where we’ll stop for lunch. Then we load up and transfer to our destination for today - the scenic old town in the Bavarian city of Burghausen, located on the banks of the river Salzach. Burghausen Castle sits along a ridgeline and is the longest castle in Europe (at 1,043m above sea level).

Burghausen to Passau
We will be riding along the German–Austrian border, crossing the Inn River, then cycling to the beautiful Danube River. Today’s route is mainly flat. We’ll spend the night in Passau - the "City of 3 Rivers" (the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz). Our hotel is in the heart of the picturesque Old Town near its famous Cathedral, which boasts the largest organ in the world. Passau is known for its baroque architecture and is one of the most beautiful towns along the Danube.

Passau to Linz (Austria)
This morning we’ll leave the charming city of Passau and cycle through beautiful landscapes along the Danube. Both river banks are covered in dense forest and you will see ruins of castles and monasteries scattered high up along the way. We’ll cycle peacefully into Austria (there is no official border crossing here). Linz has a young, vibrant atmosphere despite its many historic buildings, and is a great place to spend an afternoon.

Linz to Melk
We’ll leave Linz (2009 European Capital of Culture) and cycle through rural countryside and riverside villages. Then we’ll follow quiet side-roads and cycleways until we see Melk Abbey - a stunning baroque Benedictine monastery which is one of the highlights of the Wachau Valley. Melk is a small and picturesque town with many well-preserved historic buildings making it a delightful place to explore.

Melk to Vienna
A beautiful ride awaits as we set off through the Wachau’s historic vineyards and villages, taking in views of the steep terraces on the south-facing river banks. The Wachau, a 33 km stretch of the Danube, has a lot of natural beauty, plus stunning Baroque architecture and quaint old towns. We’ll pass through Austria’s oldest city, Krems, then follow the Danube to Vienna - the "City of Music" and Europe’s cultural capital.

Vienna (Rest Day)
You have a full day to explore Austria's capital city which is one of the world’s most livable. Perhaps visit Schönbrunn Palace and its remarkable gardens. Also, the Vienna State Opera and other sites on the Ringstrasse - the beautiful boulevard circling the inner city. Other attractions include the Naschmarkt - a food and goods market that’s been running for more than 500 years, the eccentric Hundertwasser house and museum, the Prater amusement park and many other places of interest.

Vienna to Bratislava (Slovakia)
Our route leaving Vienna takes us through extensive flood plains, which have turned into small ponds offering a rich habitat to countless species of birds, animals and insects. We will follow the Donauinsel, a long, thin island and continue to one of Austria's most important archaeological sites - the Roman remains at Petronell-Carnuntum. Much of the track is gravel but is comfortable to ride on. We will end our day in Slovakia's pretty capital of Bratislava.

Bratislava to Komarno
Today we ride the longest (FLAT) stage of our tour in Slovakia. We’ll cycle through rural villages and alongside the Danube river until we reach the Gabčíkovo–Nagymaros Dam where we’ll stop for lunch. From here it is another 2-3 hours on the bike to the historic town of Komárno (you can transfer in the bus if you prefer).This port city of Komárno is connected by bridge to the Hungarian town of Komarom, once part of Komárno. Before crossing the bridge you may like to visit Fort Monostor (in Komarom). Komárno's population today is around 37,000 and sights to see include the Castle, Zichy Palace, the Town Hall and Museum of Danubeland.

Komarno to Visegrad (Hungary)
We continue cycling alongside the Danube River to the twin village of Štúrovo/Esztergom which forms the border with Hungary. Above the well-known Gisela bridge is Esztergom with a basilica that’s the largest church of the country. Take time for a visit, before we continue cycling to our destination of Visegrád. Amazing views into the beautiful landscape of the so-called “Donauknie” will impress you. Alternatively, you can transfer from Esztergom to Visegrád in the support bus. Tonight you may like to soak in the hotel’s thermal pools.

Visegrad to Budapest (Via Szentendre)
We continue through the Danube Bend to the artists' village of Szentendre where we'll have time for sightseeing before we're back onto our bikes for the final lap into Budapest. Our last ride will be via St Margaret Island and the Parliament buildings to our hotel. Alternatively we can transfer in the bus from Szentendre to Budapest.

The first 2-3 days of this tour involve some hills and there are some longer days in the saddle. The E-Bike will give you a boost on the hilly sections. You will need a good level of cycling experience and fitness and be comfortable riding for several hours at a time.

Participants will be asked to complete a booking form after confirmation of their booking.
BOOKING CONDITIONS
To ensure the trip's viability with our suppliers, a minimum of typically 6 participants is usually required. Upon submitting your booking request, we will provide specifics regarding minimum numbers. Following trip confirmation, you may proceed with flight bookings and other travel arrangements. A ‘Limited’ trip status signifies limited spaces available. For trip status inquiries, kindly email or call our office.
DEPOSITS AND PAYMENTS
A deposit is required to secure your place on your selected tour departure. On receipt of your deposit, Global Cycling Adventures will email you a confirmation to verify your travel arrangements and advise final payment details. The final payment is normally required 60 days before departure date unless otherwise specified.
CANCELLATIONS & AMENDMENTS
All tour cancellations will require notification in writing to Global Cycling Adventures by the person participating on the tour. Please be advised that booking cancellations or amendments will incur relevant fees. Cancellation charges are tour-specific and timing-dependent. For a comprehensive outline of our terms and conditions, including the cancellation policy, please refer to the travel proposal provided by our team.
We recommend that you purchase cancellation insurance on payment of your tour deposit in case unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel your tour.
