Private: A land of happiness! Tips on touring Bhutan

Nestled in the Himalayas, Bhutan is a landlocked kingdom bounded by two of the world’s largest nations: To the north by China and to the south, east and west by India, it is a Himalayan kingdom where a traditional Buddhist culture embraces modern development.

Bhutan is full of surprises: rice is red and chillies are not considered seasons but the main ingredient! Monasteries are part of the mainstream, and giant protective penises are painted beside the entrance to many houses.

The happiness of the people of Bhutan is considered more important than Gross National product and by law, at least 60% of the country must remain in forestry, preserved for future generations. Botanical riches and unique mammals and birds are protected in many national parks, and a mountain trek is one of the best ways to experience the area.

The amazing Himalayan landscape of Bhutan is just one reason to visit. From snowcapped peaks, shadowy gorges, primeval forests, majestic monasteries, unique architecture, Buddhist culture and stunning flora and fauna, there is so much to see here.

History

The independence of Bhutan has endured for centuries and the territory was never colonized in its history. Situated on the ancient Silk Road between Tibet, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, the Bhutanese state developed a distinct national identity based on Buddhism. Headed by a spiritual leader known as the Zhabdrung Rinpoche, the territory was composed of many fiefdoms and governed as a Bhdhist theoracy.

Following a civil war in the 19th century, the House of Wangchuck reunited the country and established relations with the British Empire. Bhutan fostered a strategic partnership with India during the rise of Chinese communism and has a disputed border with the People’s Republic of China. In 2008, it transitioned from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monachy and held the first election to the National Assembly of Bhutan, that has a two party system characterising Bhutanese democracy.
