TDF Cycling Tour

Tour de France Cycling Tour from $13393 NZD
(5/5) from 1 review

The ultimate Tour de France Cycling Tour – a challenge for any cyclist to complete in six weeks!

Lance Armstrong and his companions took only three weeks cycling an average speed of 39km/hr to ride the Tour de France in 2000. It will be a challenge for any cyclist to complete this ride in six weeks!

We begin the tour in Poitiers in mid June and finish in Paris at the end of July – just one day before the arrival of the real TDF. The atmosphere on the Champs-Elysees on the final day is always amazing and we will be there! To complete the tour you will also ride the Champs-Elysees to congratulate yourself on this ‘once in a lifetime achievement’!

Our tour is not a race, however you have the opportunity to challenge yourself while having a holiday. Experience the French lifestyle and visit the many places of interest. Each day we aim to be at your next hotel by 2pm, giving you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the area. You may also choose not to ride some stages and use the day for more sightseeing stops.

Along the ride, a french holiday!

Our Tour de France cycling tour is not a race, but you still have the opportunity to challenge yourself while having a holiday where you can experience the French lifestyle and visit the many places of interest. Each day we aim to be at your next hotel by 2pm, giving you plenty of time to chill out and explore the area. Plus you may choose not to ride some stages and use the day for more sightseeing stops instead! We have also included a total of 6 rest days, including two consecutive days in Aix-en Provence (see the attached document). During this long holiday, you will cross many of France's regions, starting from the west side, travelling south to the mountains and then the Mediterranean, before heading north via the continental east side of the country!

Come for a ride, or just enjoy the view

Please enquire about available places for sightseeing passengers only. We'll stay in cosy hand-picked 2–4 star hotels and lodges. Join Global Adventure Guide for an exhilarating adventure you'll never forget.

Full Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival Day: Poiters

Cycling 17 km

We begin our cycling in Poitiers. Over the next 43 days we'll have the opportunity to challenge ourselves while having a holiday, experience the French lifestyle and visit many places of interest. A full day-to-day itinerary is available from Global Cycling Adventures. Call us today or email the team [email protected]!

Meals: Dinner

DAY 2

Chasseneuil-de-Poitou - Futuroscope loop

Cycling 47 km

Today marks the true beginning of our tour. From the hotel, we roll to the ‘Avenue de Tour de France’ to start our cycling adventure with a 47 km ride. We pass the Futuroscope complex, and visit some great French countryside. We ride easy country roads and pass through several villages on the way to Chasseneuil-de- Poitou. This is an ideal time to get used to riding on the right hand side, with a good mix of city and country roads.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 3

Futuroscope - Mont-sur-Guesnes – Thouars

Cycling 112 km

We start our day in the saddle from the hotel, riding along the river Clain towards Chatellerault, where we vaguely rejoin the TDF Stage 2 route again. Today we ride on a mix of small country roads and avoid all larger roads connecting medium-sized towns. The route undulates through agricultural areas and many towns and villages, creating an interesting mix of impressions including fields, small forest stands, and old (mainly Romanesque) villages. Past the ancient village of Loudun, we continue further along to the TDF 2000 Stage 2 finish to the town of Thouars. We are staying away from the larger cities of Chatellerault and Loudun to avoid riding in heavy traffic. Today’s lunch stop will be in a small village with very little chance of missing the support bus!

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 4

Thouars – Saint Christophe - Nantes

Cycling 137 km

Beautiful rural trails are today’s highlight as we head to the Loire region on quiet roads, away from the larger towns and cities. Fingers crossed, the weather will be fine, so we can enjoy the summery scent of freshly cut grass. The Loire region is one of the most productive agricultural areas of France. Be prepared to negotiate your way around quite a few tractors! Our destination: ‘Europe’s Green Capital’, Nantes — the largest city in Brittany, and the 6th largest in France.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 5

Nantes – St-Nazaire

76 km or 85 km

After a few longer distances we’ll change gear today, and relive the spirit of the 2000 team time trial with this “80 or so km” ride from Nantes along the river Loire to its estuary — the Bay of Biscay. We stop for coffee in Le Pellerin, right on the banks of the Loire river. It is a great spot to stretch the legs and - hopefully - enjoy some sunshine...
