Chile & Argentina Mountain Biking Tour

from $5150 NZD
(5/5) from 4 reviews

A superb mountain bike journey through the Lake District of Chile and Argentina – a landscape of snowcapped volcanoes, deep valleys, lakes and monkey puzzle tree forests set against the awesome Andes mountains.

Starting in the Chilean lakeside town of Puerto Varas (near Puerto Montt), our route is mostly on gravel roads (plus small sections of tarseal and dirt tracks) that skirt immense lakes and pass through small towns.  Accommodation along the way is a mix of small hotels, lodges, cabanas and family run hospedajes, chosen for their location, hospitality and friendly welcome.

Among the many highlights: Bariloche with its alpine architecture and chocolates, biking the 7 lakes route to San Martin de los Andes, the molten crater of the Villarica volcano, and the immense monkey puzzle trees of parque National Conguillio.

Chile & Argentina Mountain Biking - Global Cycling Adventures

Both my partner and I enjoyed the tour and found the cycling was challenging at times but quite achievable. We found the scenery very interesting as it would constantly change.

Chile & Argentina Mountain Biking - Global Cycling Adventures

I have nothing but the highest praise for our guides Vincentio, Ismael, and Alvaro. We always felt like we were in good hands with them, and that they had everything under control. They worked their tails off and made it all look so easy.

Perfectly wonderful trip - all aspects. Guides were just amazing - best in all the various tours I did while in South America. Can't sing their praises enough!

Chile & Argentina Mountain Biking - Global Cycling Adventures

The highlight was the climb of Volcan Villarica. The pasta dinner we had at Villa Traful at a small restaurant which was 300 m from the Adria Chalets was amazing. Also enjoyed the single track in the monkey puzzle tree forest. The views were spectacular everywhere.

Full Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival Day: Puerto Montt to Puerto Varas, Chile

No biking

Please make your own way to the ‘capital’ of the Chilean Lake District, Puerto Montt. Your guides will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel (approx 20 km), at Puerto Varas, a town well known for its seafood. Time to rest from your travels and prepare your bike for tomorrow. At a convenient time, you'll meet your other tour members and guide for an informal talk about the tour days ahead.

Meals: None

DAY 2

Puerto Varas to Puelo, Chile

Cycling: approx. 40 km

After breakfast, we'll drive southwards through pretty Chamiza and Lenca, and follow the outskirts of the dramatic emerald Alcere Andino National Park to Caleta La Arena (an alcere is an endangered local conifer). Here we'll board a local ferry for a 40 minute crossing of Reloncavi Estuary, a fiord off Reloncavi Sound, to the forested island of Caleta Puelche. Then it's onto our bikes for the first time, on a gorgeous unsurfaced track/road alongside the fiord. We'll stay tonight in a Lodge, accessed by boat.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 3

Puelo to Ensenada to Las Cascadas, Chile

Biking: approx. 75 km

Today, a longer ride, but on easier terrain. After a brief crossing of an arm of the fiord, we'll continue north on a great off-road section to Sotomo and the resort town of Cochamó, on the fiord's far tip (46 km). We'll continue for 36 km on a superb tarmac section. The Osorno volcano (2660 m) dominates the skyline here. We'll then drive to the impressive Petrohué Waterfalls, rushing over polished volcanic rocks. We are now in the centre of Chile’s first national park, Parque National Vincente Pérez Rosales. We'll stay overnight in the relaxed surroundings of Las Cascadas.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 4

Las Cascadas to Villa Angostura, Argentina

Biking: approx. 42 km

Dominating the skyline now is the ever impressive Volcan Osorno (2660m) which we will pass during our morning transfer from Ensenada to Salto del Indio. As we reach the edge of Parque National Puyehue it’s time to leave Chile for a few days and cross over by bike into Argentina at Paso Cardenal Samore. An exciting well-surfaced and predominantly downhill ride takes us to Villa La Angostura on the edge of Lago Nahuel Huapi. It's a perfect base for the night with its Alpine style architecture set against a backdrop of snow capped peaks and the crystal clear waters of the lake.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 5

Villa Angostura to Bariloche, Argentina

Biking: approx. 59 km

We start with a largely flat route along the lakeshore towards our destination of Bariloche. Todays ride really sums up what riding in the Lake District is all about, with views of snow dusted peaks to the left and the serene waters of a glacial lake stretching out to the right. Most of the riding is before lunch which will be at Mirador de Bariloche. From here there are stunning views over the Andes and lago Nahuel Huapi. Then its a fast 11km downhill and a short transfer to Bariloche. With its Swiss style architecture and famed for its chocolates, Bariloche has been given the apt title of the St. Moritz of South America. Then there is really only one way to end the day – Argentine steak and majestic Malbec, followed by some tasty chocolate treats.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 6

Bariloche to Villa Tráful, Argentina

Cycling: approx. 35 km

We farewell the ‘Switzerland of the South’. After a transfer we ride on the road towards Confluencia, from where wonderful rock formations can be seen high above us. Now in the Valle Encantado, the views are superb and from here we follow a track into another pretty valley. We stop at Mirador de Lago, which offers spectacular views of Lago Traful. Our final ride to Villa Tráful encounters a series of twists and turns along a wooded track that skirts Lago Tráful. We stay in cabanas tonight and have dinner in the lovely surroundings of this small town.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 7

Villa Tráful to San Martín de los Andes

Cycling: approx. 72 km

From Villa Tráful we ride along the spectacular Ruta de Siete Lagos (the Seven Lakes Route) towards the town of San Martin de los Andes. Following a good dirt road we roll and wind through woods and past beautiful lakes with snow dusted mountains in the distance. Just before lunch a 30 minute transfer leads to a great picnic spot in a very tranquil and special area. Back on the bikes we ‘scoot’ along the smooth road, finishing with a great descent. Nestled by Lago Lacar and surrounded by mountains San Martin is a real treat where we check in to a comfortable hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 8

San Martín de los Andes to Pucón, Chile

Biking: approx. 53 km

Today we'll drive back into Chile! We'll unload our bikes at the Mamuil Malal mountain pass. We'll get our first views of the stunning Lanin volcano (3747 m), with its near-perfect snow-covered cone, as we bike to the border at Paso Tromen. We'll quickly go through the normal formalities and renew our Chilean visas. Next is a twisting road into Parque Villarica where monkey puzzle tree forests abound. As always, you can bike as much or as little as you wish. Some may wish to cycle all the way to El Turbio, where we re-board the support vehicle and drive to nearby Pucón.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 9

Pucón, Chile (Rest Day)

Rest day

Pucón is a pretty town with a nice climate, on the shores of beautiful Lake Villarica. We'll explore the surrounding countryside by bike. Popular routes include rides to one of the many beautiful waterfalls in the area. For those looking for more adventure, there is always a spot of white water rafting, or you could climb the Villarica volcano (2847 m). Staring into its molten centre makes you feel as if you are staring into the centre of the earth. The sulphur fumes are not so special but the ‘surprise’ descent is simply the icing on the cake. Certainly a ‘must do’! (Rafting & volcano climb are extra cost).

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 10

Pucón to Conguillio National Park, Chile

Biking: approx. 50 km

Breakfast finished, we jump into the support vehicle for a transfer to the start of today’s ride which is all on smooth and 100% flat tarmac. We arrive at the beautiful Parque Conguillio National Park from where gentle cycling takes us along the bottom of the valley devoted to agriculture and farming. Tonight we stay in a beautiful wooden lodge in the park, located in a very private and tranquil setting where we are sure to receive a warm welcome.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 11

Parque Conguillio to Temuco, Chile

Cycling: approx. 50 km

The Conguillio National Park includes the Llaima volcano, one of the most active in South America! You'll ride through woodland, then suddenly enter a barren rock and ash landscape, with solidified lava 'rivers'. Soon we'll re-enter beech and araucaria forest so dense it blocks out the sun. We'll pass tranquil lakes Verde and Conguillio, and then bike back to Melipueco. Then we can change out of our cycling clothes and after a celebratory beer or cuppa, drive to our lodgings in or near Temuco. We'll reminisce about our adventures, perhaps with more lovely Chilean or Argentinean wine.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 12
