We’ll ride off-road tracks parallel to the ancient Kings’ Highway — the world’s oldest trade caravan route. We’ll feast at a traditional Bedouin Zarb. You’ll visit the spiritual site of Mt Nebo with views over the ‘Promised Land’, then swim in the Dead Sea, 400 m below sea level.

We cross 2 deserts, and visit one of the 7 wonders of the world: Petra, built into cliff faces. We camp in Bedouin tents, and finish our tour with a dip in the Red Sea.

Jordan bike tour - 10 day tour from the Dead Sea to the Red Sea

My special experience was out in the desert plus the day we rode over a range of hills and the visit to Petra.

Terry May 28, 2012

What an adventure, from Dead Sea to the Red Sea, passing impressive sights like Petra and the crusader castles. Sleeping virtually under the stars in Wadi Rum. Having a group of camels running next to us. What more can you ask for?
Food was excellent and the local tour guides were extremely customer oriented and knew their country inside out. A big thank you to all who made this happen!

Full Itinerary

DAY 1

Madaba: arrival day

No biking

On arrival in Amman, we will transfer you to Madaba, 30 km from Jordan's capital. At around 4pm, meet your tourguide and fellow travellers for a full tour briefing, where any questions can be answered. There will be time to build your bikes (if you brought your own) before we head to one of our favourite Madaba restaurants for a welcome dinner. It's your first chance to experience Jordan's delicious Middle Eastern-style cuisine.

Meals: Dinner

DAY 2

Madaba to Mt Nebo to Mukawir to the Dead Sea

Biking: approx. 78 km

Today we'll explore Madaba and its astonishing 6th century mosaics. Next we'll drive to Mt Nebo (or Pisgah in the Bible), where Moses is said to have viewed the Promised Land. Any hire bikes will be collected from our store, and then we ride past farms and villages to the ancient former trade route, the King's Highway. At Libb junction, climb a hill for panoramic Dead Sea views. At nearby Mukawir, a local family will host us for lunch before we ride 1000 metres downhill to the Dead Sea, the lowest spot on Earth.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch with a local family, Dinner

DAY 3

The Dead Sea to Karak

Biking: approx. 50 km or 71 km

This morning, float in the Dead Sea's buoyant and therapeutic salty waters, before cycling the Dead Sea route south for 50 km. After a picnic lunch, its a 25 km climb to Kerak Crusader Castle, but for those not keen on such a long uphill challenge, just cruise up in the 4x4. Next we explore the castle, built in 1142 — a great example of military genius. We check into the hotel and have time to relax before dinner. This evening, why not take a walk in the old part of Karak town.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4

Karak to Wadi Hasa to Dana Nature Reserve

Biking: approx. 57 km

We leave Karak to rejoin the King's Highway, heading for amazing views at Al Hasa canyon. After descending into the wadi (dry river valley), we then climb for over 22 km (800 m) to the top of its southern bank. The ride is fully supported by a 4x4 vehicle, so anytime you've had enough biking, we are there for you. After a picnic lunch, we'll drive 37 km to Dana village on the wadi's edge, where fascinating nature can be found on a self-guided trail around the area.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Dana to Shobak to Wadi Araba to Wadi Musa (near Petra)

Biking: approx. 70 km

Today's ride takes us down the King's Highway to Shoubak, at one of the highest elevations in Jordan. After exploring the remains of its Crusader castle, we climb past two villages to an off-road track with great views of the Wadi Araba Desert. Again, the 4x4 vehicle is available instead of biking. Next, join our guide on a single trail descent or choose a gentler route to Al-Beidha (Little Petra) with its rock-cut monuments and water channels. Then its off to nearby Wadi Musa, our base for exploring Petra's rose-hued ruins.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6

Petra

No biking

A local guide will lead us through an immense sandstone crack into what feels like another world: ancient Petra. Then you're on your own to explore as you like. Petra is famously described as 'a rose-red city as old as time'. Established in the 6th century BC, it's Jordan's most popular attraction, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the extraordinary buildings cut into rock, the towering rock surrounds, and the ancient hydraulic engineering.

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 7

Petra to Wadi Rum (across the desert)

Biking: approx. 55 km

We start by rejoining the King's Highway for a short drive to Rajif at 1565 m. Then we'll bike through amazing desert landscapes and have lunch at an old caravan station. After biking to the desert highway to meet our 4x4, we'll drive to Rum Bedouin village to meet our host. A jeep takes us to the Wadi Rum Protected Area, where we settle in at our Bedouin campsite, watch the sunset and enjoy 'zarb' — a traditional meal of meat and vegetables cooked under the sand. Much of David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia was filmed here.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8

Wadi Rum Desert to Disi mudflats to Aqaba

Biking: approx. 50 km

After breakfast we're off to the mudflats of Disi — a vast flat area surrounded by amazing sandstone formations. We'll then ride through the colourful and massive desert mountains. After lunch, a drive to the coastal city of Aqaba in the far south. There will be enough time for a plunge into the Red Sea, the world's northernmost tropical sea, before heading back to our hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch

DAY 9

Aqaba - The Red Sea

No biking

You have a free day at your beach resort to experience the pleasant waters of the Red Sea — whether you'd like to go diving (book in advance), swimming, snorkelling or just relax on the beach with a cold drink in hand, the choice is yours. In the evening we drive to downtown Aqaba for our farewell dinner at one of the town's traditional restaurants.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 10
