Cycling the Danube from Passau to Vienna

Just back from Europe after a fantastic week of cycling alongside the Danube from Passau to Vienna. As first timers of self guided bike trips, I must say this route was so easy to follow as there are cycle path signs at almost every corner and vary rarely were we sharing the ‘road’ with any traffic. We crossed the river from time to time, either over bridges or by small ferry boat, depending what we wanted to visit along the way. There were no hills, so we could just cruise along, still having plenty of time for coffee stops or to visit places of interest that were recommended in the route book. The cycle path sometimes veered away from the river where we found ourselves cycling from village to village amongst wheat, sunflower and maize crops. One thing that surprised me was how easy it was to cycle into the centre of Vienna – cycle paths all the way! At the end of each day our luggage was always waiting for us at our hotel. The highlights for me were cycling at our own pace and spending a lot of time in the countryside and exploring quaint little villages that are scattered right along the Danube.
